Hargeisa Water Agency Inaugurates Arrival of Pipes

A delegation including the representatives of Hargeisa Water Agency (HWA), Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) and Hargeisa Urban Water Supply Upgrading Project (HUWSUP) paid visit to Berbera Port to inaugurate the arrival of pipes and fitting equipment for installation of a new transmission pipeline from Geedeble to Chinese Reservoir which will replace the timeworn old Hargeisa water transmission pipeline. It Is planned that trucks will transport these pipes and fittings to a storage site in Hargeisa. The pipes will transmit water over a distance of 23 km from the well field in Geed Deeble to the Chinese reservoir, North of Hargeisa.

Briefing the media at the port of Berbera, HWA Manager, Mr. Ibrahim Siyad said: “ Today, we are here to inaugurate the arrival of pipes for Hargeisa water supply upgrading, thanks to government’s commitment and funding from EU and SDF. I am optimistic that Hargeisa population will get adequate clean piped water in the near future”

Hargeisa Water Agency (HWA) is a government utility entity mandated by government of Somaliland to supply water to the city of Hargeisa, and has embarked on a vigorous programme aimed at improving the water supply system by executing a series of activities to increase the amount of water available and improve the distribution network. These activities are implemented by UN Habitat and co funded by the European Union (EU) and the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) via HUWSUP. The SDF co - funding to HUWSUP is US$ 8.6M out of which US$ 7.2M USD is co –financing for the pipes and fittings.

The SDF is a 4 - year fund designed to support the Government of Somaliland (GoSL) filling a critical gap supporting projects that are fully aligned to the National Development Plan (NDP). SDF is currently funded by the Department for International Development (DFID), the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and the Governments of Norway and Netherlands.
