SDF 1 Projects

This 4.9m USD project improved the livelihoods of around 30,000 citizens living in the rural areas of Maroodijeh Upper Catchment by supporting conservation agriculture. The project focussed on: 1) capacity building of the Ministry of Agricultural Development; 2) improving soil and water conservation through the construction of large soil bunds, check dams, etc. across over 11,000 hectares; 3) supporting better dryland farming practices; and 4) re-establishment of Aburin Dryland Research Centre. As a result, crop production increased from 0.8 to 1.0 tonnes per hectare. SDF2 is currently supporting a similar project in Durdur Ad catchment area.

This 4.5m USD livestock project aimed to increase income from animal production by improving services to 60,000 pastoralists. The project installed 89km of fencing for Aroori Livestock Holding Ground enclosing 20,000 hectares of land. It also built the necessary livestock holding infrastructure (ramps, animal health posts, animal sheds, crushes, water troughs, etc). As a part of SDF2, Aroori livestock holding ground is being converted into a Livestock Centre of Excellence which will provide training and extension services for animal production, fodder production and animal health for Somaliland's livestock producers.

This 1.7m USD fisheries project aimed to improve the livelihoods of 200 artisanal fisherfolk though: 1) building the capacity of MoFMR officials by training and policy development support to better manage the fishery value chain; 2) capacity development for Berbera Maritime & Fisheries Academy through construction of classrooms/workshops, provision of a training vessel and textbooks plus a functional review of the institution; 3) construction of Maydh regional office, establishment of fishing cooperatives, and establishment of three cold storage and ice making facilities. SDF2 is supporting a similar project through provision of additional equipment to optimise the use of equipment supplied under SDF1, as well improvement of other aspects of the fisheries value chain in Sanaag.

This 13m USD Hargeisa Water Agency project aimed at enhancing the economic, social and health status of 422,000 Hargeisa residents through improving the availability of clean and affordable water. This was partly achieved through: 1) drilling and installation of four boreholes in Hora Hadley; 2) construction of a 5km water pipeline supply system in Ayaha 1 & 2 settlements; 3) provision of 23km of pipes and accessories for the main water transmission line that was implemented by UNHABITAT; and 4) supporting the design of extension of the Hargeisa city distribution system in southern and northern districts. The implementation of the design was later supported with KfW funding. SDF1 also supported the construction of a water quality laboratory and provided equipment and initial reagents. Under SDF2, HWA has received further funding to increase the water supply through the New Geed Deeble Pumping Station by constructing two wellfield collectors in Hora Hadley and Las Dhuure.

The 10.3m USD Roads rehabilitation project supported spurring economic growth by improving the transport link between the towns of Hargeisa through Berbera to Sheikh, benefiting 700,000 persons. This was achieved through 1) rehabilitation works of 135km of road from Hargeisa through Berbera to Shiekh and repair of two bridges 2) provision of laboratory materials for quality assurance and control tests 3) enhancing the capacity of RDA staff to plan, design and maintain roads. SDF2 has provided further funding for improvement of the Burao – Sheikh road section and overhauling of the bridges.

This 2.4m USD roads rehabilitation project aimed to spur economic growth by improving the transport links between the towns of Kalabaydh and Dilla. The project had the potential to benefit around 195,000 inhabitants. This project covered the rehabilitation works of 21km of road between the two towns, and the extension of the Road Development Agency laboratory building.

This 4.7m USD project supported the delivery of quality secondary health services to 130,000 people. The project consisted of three components: 1) improving the management system for Erigavo regional hospital; 2) physical rehabilitation of assorted infrastructure in Erigavo and Las Anod regional hospitals; and 3) supporting the recurrent costs and delivery of drugs and equipment.

This 4.3m USD education project improved the delivery of quality secondary education to 400 students through: 1) supporting school policies, procedures, and capacity building of Las Anod and Dayaha Secondary schools; 2) the renovation and construction of several buildings and the provision of equipment.

This 2.4m USD project contributed to the alleviation of rural poverty in Somaliland through: 1) the construction of 6 new and the rehabilitation of 2 existing regional offices, and the construction of a conference hall; 2) establishment of community-led conservation of 4 grazing reserves and 5 community forest reserves covering 1,900 hectares; and 4) the establishment of 5 tree nurseries.

The 0.8m USD project contributed to the development of the draft Somaliland National Land Policy. This policy has since been approved and is already being implemented.

This 7.5m USD project, implemented by the Ministry of Water Resource Development, supported the improvement of the water supply for 67,800 Somaliland citizens. The intention was to ensure access was equitable and availability was sustainable for all the different people competing for the use of water. This was achieved through: 1) a functional review of the MWRD, and addressing the gaps identified; 2) the development of Berbera town water master plan, the rehabilitation of Dubar springs, and then connecting them to the town water supply system; 3) expansion of the Burao town water distribution system through 14km of pipelines and two 100,000 litre elevated tanks; 4) Las Anod town water supply studies to identify potential water sources; 5) construction of Hadaftimo and Gargooray rural water supply systems; 6) support to Borama water supply expansion. Under SDF2, the Ministry is being supported to implement a project aimed at further improvement for water access in Borama town.

This 1.2m USD project enhanced citizen awareness of government priorities and activities through: 1) raising SDF visibility as the government vehicle for delivering donor-funded development projects; and 2) increasing citizen awareness about government priorities, plans and expenditure.
